Project Outcome
Description of Outcome The sustainable improved delivery of services for irrigated agriculture and better water management in Punjab.
Implementation Progress
Description of Project Outputs Rehabilitation and upgrading (R&U) of Balloki Barrage and new infrastructure for enhanced flood management. R&U of Balloki Barrage and LBDC and Balloki-Sulemank Link Canal head regulators to safely discharge maximum flows and improved control and safety over variable flows.
Comprehensive R&U of LBDC irrigation system distribution infrastructure resulting in an improved supply of irrigation water, especially at the tail ends. Development of farmer organizations for improved management of water resources.
Improved groundwater management with regard to quantity (depth of water table) and quality (salinity and sodicity), improved practices for groundwater and conjunctive use management at the farm level, and improved drilling practice within LBDC.
Improved on-farm water management (OFWM) efficiency that employs conjunctive use practices; improved application practices; and alternative irrigation technologies.
Improved operations, maintenance, and management of LBDC at all canal levels (from minor to main) resulting in improved efficacy, efficiency, and equity for water distribution.
Resettlement and environment plans and procedures developed and executed.
Status of Implementation Progress (Outputs, Activities and Issues) There are contracts for 5 packages of consultant services comprising about 333 person-months of international specialists and 1,423 peron-months of national experts to support all facets of project implementation. Consultant recruiment is complete except for two packages. Draft prequalification document for Rehabilitation and upgrading of Balloki Barrage and Canal Head Regulators approved by ADB on 18 May 09. Invitation for bid published in ADB website on 1 June 2009 and published in a newspaper of national circulation on 30 May 2009. It is anticipated that tendering will start by the end of 2009.
